Nails keeping them healthy and desease free.

The nails of humans are present at the end of each fingertip on the dorsal surface. The main function of nail is protection and it also helps for a firm grip for holding articles. It consists of a strong relatively flexible keratinous nail plate originating from the nail matrix. Under the nail plate there is a soft tissue called nail bed. Between the skin and nail plate there is a nail fold or cuticle. Normal healthy nail is slight pink in colour and the surface is convex from side to side. Finger nails grow 1 cm in three months and toe nails take 24 months for the same.

Importance of nails in disease diagnosis:

The colour, appearance, shape and nature of the nails give some information about the general health and hygiene of a person. Nails are examined as a routine by all doctors to get some clues about underlying diseases. Just looking at nails we can make out the hygiene of a person. The abnormal nail may be congenital or due to some diseases. The cause for changes in the nail extend from simple reasons to life threatening diseases. Hence the examination by a doctor is essential for diagnosis .Some abnormal findings with probable causes are discussed here for general awareness.

1) Hygiene:-
We can make out an unhygienic nail very easily .Deposition of dirt under the distal end of nail plate can make a chance for ingestion of pathogens while eating. If nail cutting is not done properly it can result in worm troubles in children. When the worms crawl in the anal orifice children will scratch which lodges the ova of worms under the nails and will be taken in while eating. Prominent nail can also complicate a skin disease by habitual scratching. Sharp nails in small kids are a real danger because small wounds can injure others when they do feet kicking or hand waving.

2) Colour of the nails:-
a) Nails become pale in anaemia.
b) Opaque white discolouration (leuconychia) is seen in chronic renal failure and nephrotic syndrome.
c) Whitening is also seen in hypoalbuminaemia as in cirrhosis and kidney disorders.
d) Drugs like sulpha group, anti-malarial and antibiotics etc. can produce discolouration in the nails.            
e) Fungal infection causes black discolouration.
f) In pseudomonas infection nails become black or green.
g) Nail bed infarction occurs in vasculitis especially in SLE and polyarthritis.
h) Red dots are seen in nails due to splinter haemorrhages in subacute bacterial endo Carditis, rheumatoid arthritis, trauma, collagen vascular diseases.
i) Blunt injury produces haemorrhage and causes blue/black discolouration.
 j) Nails become brown in kidney diseases and in decreased adrenal activity.
k) In Wilson’s disease blue colour in semicircle appears in the nail.
l) When the blood supply decreases nail become yellow .In jaundice and psoriasis also nail become yellowish.
m) In yellow nail syndrome all nails become yellowish with pleural effusion.

3) Shape of nails:-
a) Clubbing: Here tissues at the base of nails are thickened and the angle between the nail base and the skin is obliterated. The nail becomes more convex and the fingertip becomes bulbous and looks like an end of a drumstick. When the condition becomes worse the nail looks like a parrot beak.
Causes of clubbing:- Congenital Injuries, Severe chronic cyanosis, Lung diseases like empyema, bronchiectasis, carcinoma of bronchus and pulmonary tuberculosis.
Abdominal diseases like Crohn's disease, polyposis of colon, ulcerative colitis, liver cirrhosis etc.
Heart diseases like tetralogy of Fallot, subacute bacterial endocarditis and etc.             
b) Koilonychias:- Here the nails become concave like a spoon. This condition is seen in iron deficiency anaemia. In this condition the nails become thin, soft and brittle. The normal convexity will be replaced by concavity.
c) Longitudinal ridging is seen in Raynaud’s disease.
d) Cuticle becomes ragged in dermatomyositis.
e) Nail fold telangiectasia is a sign in dermatomyositis, systemic sclerosis and SLE.

4) Structure and consistency:-
a) Fungal infection of nail causes discolouration, deformity, hypertrophy and abnormal brittleness.
b) Thimble pitting of nail is characteristic of psoriasis, acute eczema and alopecia areata.
c) The inflammation of cuticle or nail fold is called paronychia.
d) Onycholysis refers to the detachment of the nail from the nail bed, usually starting at the tip and/or sides. The separation of nail bed seen in psoriasis, infection and after taking Tetracyclines.
e) Destruction of nail is seen in lichen planus, epidermolysis bullosa.
f) Missing nail is seen in nail patella syndrome. It is a hereditary disease.
g) Nails become brittle in Raynaud’s disease and gangrene.
h) Falling of nail is seen in fungal infection, psoriasis and thyroid diseases.
 
5) Growth:-
Reduction in oxygen in your blood supply affects the growth of nails and all nail problems. Nail growth is also affected in severe illness. When the disease disappears the growth starts again resulting in formation of transverse ridges. These lines are called Beau's lines and are healpful to date the onset of illness.

6) The importance of Oxygen
Oxygen provides life and energy to every living cell. If poor eating habits, drinking, pollution, toxins, drugs or lack of exercise abuse your own human systems of body, mind and spirit. When your cells and your genetics are deprived of vital oxygen the immune system becomes weakened.

For all the benefits for publishers, authors, and readers alike of the various digital formats, we can't forget that books are for first and foremost for readers. There is nothing that can compare with a good print book. There is the look and the feel, and even the smell of a new book. The act of turning the pages, and holding something tangible in your hand that a digital version just can't match.

Do we need to read everything in print? Definitely not, but when you find a treasured book; something you would recommend to all your friends, maybe a children's book that you would like your children, your nieces and nephews, your neighbor's children, and even your grandchildren to read, go ahead and buy the hardcover, or paperback version as well as the digital version, in order to really treasure that book in a greater way then you ever could do with the digital version alone.

I remember my experience with my first ebook.  When I told people I knew that I had written an ebook, the reaction was nonplussed.  "Oh that's nice" was about the strongest reaction I got. The way a person recovers from an injury, or a conflict, or some emotional stress should be a non-event in one’s life. In other words, getting better should be automatic response in the right way, just like when you cut finger slightly, it mends itself by itself. It would be awesome if other traumas in life like, emotional stress, physical injuries and conflicts resolved themselves by themselves in the same way.

However, during the healing process, if these emotional stresses, injuries and conflicts are putting some unwanted negative stimulus in our life, then this influence may begin running or at least supplying a strong influence over our innate system.

So instead of oneself being in control of our lives, a vicious cycle starts and then perpetuates itself with results in often increasing our symptoms and our illness. So you limp continues or your shoulder continues aching and we seem powerless to erase or correct this ongoing situation.

So how in reality does this happen? Now each muscle and nerve in our body ultimately connects to our brain through our internal electrical and nervous systems. The pain sensors trigger and begin possibly influencing our behaviours, our structure and our emotions. This then could possibly be causing many undesired influence on our daily life in a negative way.

The way we learnt to walk, run, play sport and so on is because our brain is constantly running "programs", signalling our muscles to do these things. Different "programs" run causing different movements that we want to make. These programs are very sophisticated enabling us when we walk for example, to also see, hear, keep our balance, talk laugh and so on.

Let me finish this article aby way of an example of conflict resolution and how using my Resolve Beyond Neurology can help.

Conflict Resolution Example:  You see a person who should be doing say accountancy in life, it’s what he is most suited to as all the tests he did at school to determine a possible career path showed he would be a great accountant.

But he is doing a plumbers job. You say “why aren’t you doing accountancy”.  He says, “Because my father said I’d never be any good as an accountant” – And he believed his father and not the school career tests he did! He now “the plumber” has an instant conflict that perhaps could go on for all his life, and this could make him ill.

Using the Beyond Neurology approach in client care can highlight how these conflicts can happen. We need to be aware and look for these conflicts and refocus to find the best solution.

Conflict Example:  A person having trouble learning – shows they have had a conflict between what they want to learn and what they have had to learn. A person’s truth is always with them. We can’t teach them their own truth only they can do that.

But what is it that is stopping them from discovering and expressing their own truth? These obstacles are often unknown by the subconscious and using methods and techniques outlined in my Resolve Beyond neurology Training Classes we can identify not only the mechanisms of the compensation patterns, but the context and the values that they are trying to live out and what is we do when we work with clients is helping them to get back to normal. Most important not what we as practitioners “think is normal” but acceptance by the client of normal for them and their conflict resolution.

Brian Dean from Backlinko has produced an exhaustive list of 131 of the best SEO tools available.  The best part of it is that he has actually tested all of them, and rated each one.  (Quite an undertaking).  He told me personally that he spent 90 hours doing the research for the post.  (See the comments below the post). There is no way I have spent anywhere near that amount of time on reesearch for any post I have ever written.  Some of the tools he reviews are paid or minimum cost, but many of them are also free. I have used some of them personally, and will be trying out a number of them over the next few weeks.

Brian is one of those bloggers that writes these epic posts that hundreds of people comment on, and is viewed by tens of thousands of visitors to his site.  His site Backlinko has an Alexa rating of 6,863  That is pretty impressive in and of itself, but he has managed to accumulate over 2,600 backlinks to his site from sites such as Wikipedia and Huffington Post.

I guess you could say he is well qualified to answer questions about backlinking and SEO.

Why is blogging an important tool for Internet Marketers?

Those who are new to Internet Marketing, may wonder, "Do I need to blog?" or "If I need to blog, how often should I post?" The reasons may vary greatly from person to person, as well as the frequency of blog posts.

It could be a simple desire to sell stuff online, or maybe just a need to express yourself and communicate with others. For me, I think it is much more than that. I would have to call on a Latin phrase to describe why I write, and why I blog. I have a condition called cacoethes scribendi. It is not medical, but loosely translated it means "an insatiable desire to write."

I have done technical writing for nearly 20 years. I love to describe technical subjects in layman's terms that anyone can understand. For an example, see an article I wrote quite a while ago here, VoIP Demystified. I have been a regular blogger since 2007, and I have been using WordPress for much of that time.

To see the first blog I set-up see NJ Writer's Group on blogger. When I look back over the past 8 years, it is really quite amazing how the Internet and especially content writing for the web has changed over that time. It is equally amazing that despite massive changes in Internet technology, some things remain the same.  

My desire to write and to blog have only increased with each passing year. I love to write about Internet Marketing subjects, and if I can simplify or make someone's journey on that path a little easier, I am very happy to do that.

Do you know what Steve Jobs, John D. Rockefeller, Amelia Earhart, and Ulysses S. Grant have in common?

They each possessed the talent of turning obstacles into opportunities drawn from the Stoic ideologies of Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius.

While living our lives, it’s very likely that you will run into some pretty distressing events, and at other times it’ll seem like everything is running exactly as it should with very few discomforts.

And arguably, the more interesting and worthwhile a life goal is, the more sacrifice and inconvenience will be required from you up front. Yet we often find ourselves complaining about all the little things that happen to us during this path for greatness.

It stems from the false assumption that somehow we can have it all: build that amazing startup and never deal with rejections; live your awesome lifeand remain unexposed by all of its obstacles.

To achieve greatness, you need to re-program your brain to not think this way — it’s unrealistic and self sabotaging. It won’t help you achieve worthwhile goals since worthwhile goals are almost guaranteed to put you through adversity.

Most importantly, your brain is telling you that you are dominated by circumstance and the decisions of other people, instead of letting it be a force of your own. You start to subconsciously prioritize pleasure over pain, making it really hard to truly start executing on your vision.

So the question is not how skilled of an entrepreneur, artist, or writer you are, but can you keep it steady and focus only on what you can change, no matter how much external events may fluctuate?

Part 1: Develop the Skill of Eudaimonia

 

Keeping your irrational emotions in check during tribulations is not easy to develop since your brain is always telling you the react the way it’s been conditioned to. But it’s a skill that can be cultivated so you can focus your energy on solving problems, rather than reacting to them. It’s the key to making your life successful all on your own.

The Greeks refer to this state as Eudaimonia, which is defined as a contented state of happiness. In a more literal sense, eudaimonia means to have a good indwelling spirit to make the right actions. Unfortunately, today we associate ‘happiness’ as a subjective feeling rather than an objective state that characterizes a well-lived life irrespective of the emotional state we experience.

Realize that it isn’t outside influence that make us feel something, it’s our inner thoughts that create our feelings (which often stress us out). When this happens, we point the finger at external events, but all that does is create more conflicts in our minds. When we avoid the reality of an uncomfortable situation — meeting a deadline, boss’s urgent email — we weaken our self-disciple and harm ourselves.

Another way of applying this principle is asking yourself:

Does getting upset or panicking provide your with better options?

Sometimes it does, but more often it does not.

If an emotion can’t change the situation you’re in, it’s likely a destructive one.

I’m not saying to stop feeling everything. If you need to take a moment, go right ahead and feel it. But be prepared to tackle emotions with logic because with enough logical questions and statements you’ll get to the causes, which are much easier to comprehend.

Part 2: Fear nothing

 

Fear can only enter the mind if you want it to. If you choose not to be afraid then fear will simply vanish.

Premeditatio Malorum is the technique of overcoming problems by vividly imagining what it would be like to face those misfortunes in order to practice gratitude and prepare for the worst.

Here’s some of mine:

I imagine losing my startup. We don’t close our next round of funding. Our main customer acquisition channel fizzes out. My co-founder leaves the company.

Everyday when I call my girlfriend, I feel in that moment that it could be the last time I ever speak with her. It keeps my appreciation fresh and strengthens our relationship.

A good one by Steve Jobs is reminding myself that I’ll be dead soon. It could be tomorrow or in another 80 years, but nothing helps me focus more than thinking about death.

Part 3: Use Pain As Your Teacher

 

Just as physical pain is caused by a bodily injuries and sickness, mental distress is caused by the wrong belief system and incorrect judgements.

But living with pain could help us develop endurance and inner calm instead of mentally destructive passions. Remember, emotional reactions are natural — it’s how you respond to them that’s important.

Marcus Aurelius describes pain as something that is neither good nor evil. It’s something that hurts without discrimination, but like everything else in life, it will end eventually.

The Negative Visualization Exercise

 

Here’s a practical exercise I learned from Tim Ferris to accomplish big goals by defining your pains:

  1. Take an 8 x 11 paper and make three columns.
  2. On the top write something big you want to accomplish (quit your job and start a startup, move to Bali, write a fiction novel, whatever).
  3. On the first column write the worst possible things that could happen if you made that decision.
  4. On the next column, write how you could minimize all of that from happening.
  5. On the last one, write how you could get back to where you were originally. Like getting back to the industry you left to start your own business.

I did this when I decided to start LawTrades and not work for a firm straight out of law school. On a scale of 1 to 10 I assigned a pain level of about 3 (I could always work at a law firm if it didn’t pan out) and a life changing score of 10 (wake up everyday loving what I do).

Part 4: Respond, Not React

 

Don’t react to the world. You may respond but not react. A response is an action taken based on logic. A reaction is an impulse based on an emotional state. Your reaction will not alter the world. Your reaction only changes you. Your response is what will change the world.

  • All is temporary
  • Do everything as if it were the last thing you do in your life
  • Have nothing you are not prepared to lose
  • Accept what can’t be changed
  • Refuse to be a victim
  • Practice misfortune
  • Negative visualization
  • Don’t let emotions override what your mind tells you
